The TATA Group has been in the forefront of corporate support to the treatment of and research into Cancer and all related deceases. With the generous philanthropy and enlightened direction, many cancer treatment facilities have been set up in India. Such a facility, Tata Medical Center opened in Kolkata in 2011 to address the huge deficit in cancer care facilities in the eastern and north eastern regions of India.
Under the guidance of Mr. Ratan Tata, then Chairman of the Tata Group, the facility was designed by Cannon Designs, an American firm to very high aesthetic design standards, not normally associated with charitable Institutions and executed under directions of Tata Consulting Engineers. In the first three years of its operation, under the inspirational leadership of Dr. Mammen Chandy all facilities were close to becoming unable to cope with the sheer patient volume and demand for the services offered. The Trust then decided to take up the second phase of construction immediately.
We (C&G) were invited to join the consulting team as Architects (with Cannon Design, Mumbai as design consultants) for the medical planning and interior architectural design and engineering of the Phase II.The challenge here is to create healing, stress free but stimulating, patient centric, well engineered spaces in a large and complex building. We are hopeful that we would have contributed to realizing a health care facility which would be central to the entire region in the years to come
